will any year np231 or np242 work in my 88 xj wagoneer?

as long as it is from an xj, yes 87-01

Yes, I'm pretty sure, but you will have to swap input shafts I believe.

87 to 90 had 21 spline input shafts and after that had 23 so only a 87-90 will fit the output of the tranny. You want to use a later transfercase then you have to change the input shaft to a 23 spline or change the tranny too. Ask me how I found this out!!
