Default transfer case spline count

ok so i got a 89 xj with a automatic trans a inline 6 motor with a 242 tcase. i wanna go to the local yard and pull another case and put a slip yoke in it and a rebuild kit all on the bench so my jeep isnt down and i can just pop the new one in. my question is how do i know what my spline count is where it mounts to the trans before i get one from the local yard and find out its wrong. i know the 242 is the same from 88-93 and diff from 94 up. when i say diff i mean the input bearing size. the early ones are 24mm and later ones are 16mm. any help would be great

This help?

AW4 spline count

The AW4 had 21 splines through 1990. In 1991 (the same year the 4.0 HO was introduced) the AW4 splines increased to 23.

The earlier Jeep AW4 has a 21 spline output shaft for connecting to the transfer case input shaft. With the release of the HO 4.0L in the 1991 the AW4 was upgraded to a 23 spline output shaft.

and thats straight from the site when i looks up info on the aw4 trans

Early 242s from 1988 through 1991 featured a conventional mechanical (cable) drive speedometer output. so since i have a 89 ill need 88-90 cuz 91 starts the ho motor and 23 spline count. i think i found all the info my self haha

Early 242s from 1988 through 1991 featured a conventional mechanical (cable) drive speedometer output. In 1992, Jeep introduced a three-wire, digital square wave Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), in the vein of modern automotive systems.
