Hello there cherokee family, I have a 1998 cherokee is an automatic 4x4, when i wanna engage the 4wd low the shifter only goes to the N neutral position, like it doesnt wanna go all the way back(like it goes all the way back to 4wd low but it doesnt actually get there, so i took it to the mechanic and they adjusted the linkage on it but now it goes to 4wd low and when i try to put in back to 2wd stays on 4wd part time like if there werent any 2wd, so they had told me that it could be the shifter bushings on it because they said the rubber was somewhat old and the shifter was loose. We order all 5 bushings from jeep dealer and as soon as they arrived i went over and got installed now the problem still persist???? any body had anything like this before??? this is my 3rd xj and never had anything like this happen thanks for the help.

 

my '94 does the same thing sometimes, i havent gotten around to dealing with it yet.
if it ever doesnt go all the way back, i put it back into 2h or 4h and creep forward just a hair, then it goes right in.

it sounds like the mechanic adjusted the linkage too far in the other direction if the part time light is still staying on.. does it have 2wd anymore or do u only have 4h/n/4l working?

 

well they re-adjusted it like 10 times in every way to make it work but they couldnt do it so they ended up making it the way it was so i have it in 2wd but i cant put it on 4wd low, so all i have right now is 2wd, 4wd part and full time but it sucks because i wanna be able to go mudding in hills and stuff which require some 4wd low.
