My transfer case was frozen for awhile. I could only get it into 2/4Hi. It wouldn't budge into N, or 4Lo Went underneath and sprayed the linkage with grease. After that while the car is in Park I can move it freely and get into N and 4Lo. However, when I am in drive and just stopped it will only go into 4Hi?

Any ideas why when its in drive I cannot get it to budge, but while in park it works? I have to keep getting under there every few months and spray the linkage with grease.

 

My 98XJ transfer case will only shift when the trans is in neutral other wise it wont move. I thought most were like that unless it was a shift on the fly?

 

Wont shift because of load on the t-case while in drive.

 

Gotcha so I would need to pull over and stop throw it in park and go into 4lo if I wanted to?

 

If I remember the manual says to come to complete stop when shifting to 4 lo. you really dont want to slam those planetary gears while moving very fast. You might want to check out Novak(probably spelled wrong) for a linkage upgrade.
