I have done some research but am still not sure if I have a 231 or a 242 is there a definite way to know? Help is greatly appreciated

 

Have u spent any time under the rig.

Most of the transfer cases have a stamp on them, it they havn't been ripped off. It's got what u jneed right there. It's a circle, has some red around the eges.

Am at work or I would post a pic for u.

If your shift pattern is 2wd - 4wd - 4lo its an NP231.

If it has Fulltime and part time 4WD its a 242

 

So its the 231 thanks for the help guys

 

sorry to hi-jack the thread, but which is the better t-case to have and can they be switched out with one or the other?
