Transfer case problems
From a stop when giving my 96 cherokee any gas from a little to alot it will have a clunk in transfer case area. I believe it to be transfer case, because it only does it under load in first gear, and I also took out the rear drive shaft and the clunk went away. I have replaced the rear u-joint in the drive shaft this helped but it did not go away. It only clunks/knocks three or four clicks before no longer making a noise, this has me a little puzzled on what it might be. What part of the transfer case do you guys think it might be? I have been staring at diagrams and hoping its not a main shaft that has worn teeth or something. Also the speedometer kinda skips/jumps to the 10-15mph from a take off. any thoughts ??

Change the other u joints on the driveshaft... Always change them all at once... They all have the same wear and miles... what your describing os 90% of the time u joints... pressure going on and off the shaft at stop and start... Other 7% is gears... 3% case...

Grease your slip yolk. It solved my problem.
Search the forum plenty on this subject. There is a thread with step by step instructions w/ pics in the xj section. High liklihood this is your problem, cheap easy fix.

Well I greased up the yoke, and the noise went away sorta, every now and then when turning I can barely hear it. But when I put some real stress on it, such as a burn out it makes the same old knock, I got a video of it and I will post it up.

Check your tranny mount. In my case the rubber crushed down allowing the exhaust to bang on the cross member. Sometimes they tear, sounds like you've been having some fun rompin' on it so rubber may be broken.
My exhaust was 1/4" away from cross member at rest but when turning or underload it was close enough to let it thunk on the cross member, yours sounds a little worse.
Since it is not torn I have it temporarily lifted with some old bushings.

Do you by any chance have a limited slip rear diff? I had the same problem, as did another guy in here. We both changed the rear diff fluid and added the correct LSD additive and the problem went away. Previous yo that I had spent a load of time & money changing UJs and everything else.
