How do i tell if my tcase is shot or not without looking at the fluid

currenty i have an 88xj that does not want to engage in 4h, it goes into partime 4h, into 2h and it will go into 4h but wont roll forward, it does go into 4l and move forward...is it just the gear thats out or is the tcase shot?

 

worn clutch or low to no fluid in case.

does it make a grinding/poping sound in any of the gears? that could be the chain poping

 

doesnt make a popping noise or grinding. suppose i could pull it and check the fluids. I think the last owner didnt take good care of it.

 

check the shifter linkage/bushings sounds like its going into neutral being you said it doesnt move
