What is the correct oil that should be used in your transfer case. I Purchased DEX/MERC to use my transmission. should I be using the same in my transfer case?

Yes.
What year XJ and what 4x4 system does it have?
For most a lighter fluid like you mentioned is needed b/c there's a oil pump on the xfer case and a pickup tube leading to the bottom.

I have a 2001 XJ. It is my first jeep Haven’t had it long. so I am changing all the fluids not knowing when they were done last. so I can start keeping track. Thank you for all the help.
Very important.
Take the fill plug out first.
Just to make sure you can get it out.
10 mm hex head if I remember correctly for both.

By reading around I also see that some people use Dextron 3 and some are using DEX/MERC. what is the difference? Maybe I should’ve confirmed it on mine before I changed it. Lol
