Default Transfer case oil

What is the correct oil that should be used in your transfer case. I Purchased DEX/MERC to use my transmission. should I be using the same in my transfer case?

Yes.

What year XJ and what 4x4 system does it have?

For most a lighter fluid like you mentioned is needed b/c there's a oil pump on the xfer case and a pickup tube leading to the bottom.

What I use in my '00.
Think it was a little over a quart when dry.

One thing.
Very important.
Take the fill plug out first.
Just to make sure you can get it out.
10 mm hex head if I remember correctly for both.

By reading around I also see that some people use Dextron 3 and some are using DEX/MERC. what is the difference? Maybe I should’ve confirmed it on mine before I changed it. Lol

They're interchangeable. Nothing to worry with.
