Transfer case noise: Trying not to be a newb!
Ok guys, I had started a thread earlier about a noise in or around my transmission. I have since narrowed it down all the way to the transfer case. Appearantly mine isn't doing so well. Here is some info I found in my Haynes manual. I thought it might help others who have transfer case worries:

Now, my transfer case is basically in the realm of #4. I have noise in 2H and 4H but, in 4Lo, my TC is dead silent. Also I decided to do some quick accelerations in 4Lo and discovered my TC is slipping badly. It takes some time for it to finally catch and move the vehicle forward.
Does this seem accurate to you guys? This is my first real troubleshoot on any vehicle and I'm curious to know if I'm right.
Anyway, my next question is this:
Can a newb, given the right tools (i.e. Jackstands, floor jack, rampstands, full socket set, Haynes manual), open/drop the TC and rebuild it? I'd really like to repair this myself and get some knowledge under my belt but, I am a little afraid I'm in over my head?
Please share your first TC experiences.
Thank you!

I had kinda the same problem except mine was silent in 2hi. So I tore mine apart to find my bearings were shot and the pump was broken. Not knowing your mechanical ability I would say its easier to get a used TC and swap them out.
But if you decide to rebuild it your self here is a link for you assuming you have the 231 http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...Case_NP231.pdf
