Default Transfer case help!

Im not too good with transmissions and stuff in that category. Alright, my 1996 Jeep Cherokee has the NP231 transfer case. Could I use another transfer case out of a 1992 as long as its the NP231 or would it bolt up differently?

Should bolt up fine. The only thing that I could precive being different would be the spline count or something along those lines. And what slip yoke were you planning on using.

Lmao, go for it. Nah, if they are both infact NP231 (Command Trac) they'll both have the same 2:72:1 ratio, both use the same bolts, etc etc. They stayed the same from 87-01.

no, they didnt.

87-90 will have 21 spline input.
with any manual transmission it will have a 23spl input.
You want a 92+ 231 from a 4.0/auto.

They also used 3 different spline lengths.

One thing with the older jeep TC case is the slip yoke. I forgot what year they changed it but from like 95 and on they used flexible slip yokes and earlier models used metals sye. This might make a difference. Someone with an older model xj should be able to confirm this or not.

I know they use different length splines. The driveshaft from my 92 fits in the 87 but the slip joint is too long by a half inch to an inch. There is no "slip" at all and the 87 is lifted 4" Spline wise they are the same.

BTW, if anyones looking for a trans and transfer case I have a a spare pair out in the shop.

I was referring to spline lengths on the transmission.

Good chance it would work. Both should be 23 spline and if you're lucky the length will be the same. Most autos used the same length.

You can swap the inputs. If they are both Cherokees good chance they'll be the same.
