Default Transfer Case Grinding, Not Engaging Right

I have a 2000 XJ sport. When I try to shift from 4H to 2H, the handle won't go all the way forward as it used to. And sometimes, when I first start it up (In 2H), and shift into drive, it'll grind a little...so I shift the trans to neutral then push the handle forward a little more. Do y'all think theres a problem with the linkage? Also, it is impossible to shift to 4L.

Check fluid... That would be the first thing I did.. If good or you correct it and still the same problem then I would check you linkages... Last option would be change it... Has it been under water?
