I know its chain drive case, not sure on the model tho.
Thanks

NO... That is before chevy changed to drivers drop. The 86 burb has a passenger side drop axle.

Now all that inof posted about the chevy and dodge t-cases is great info, if he has the knowldege to do that kind of stuff, as is the info about swapping inputs, but I dont think that was the info he was trying to get.
Just tryin' to help - even if it doesn't do him any good, it may help someone else... But, I do dig where you're coming from (the problem with doing something for a timespan measured in decades is that you tend to forget the difference between 'basic' and 'advanced' anymore!)

NB: I forgot to mention, but shifter mods/replacement may be required for some of those swaps! Novak is a good place to look - I like the look of their shifter linkage, and will probably order it once I get my paws on a 23-sp NP242 to put behind my AX-15 (unless I score a D300 first...)

And yes, I forgot to mention the drop as well (see parenthetical note, first paragraph...) But, as long as the drop's good an you can make the shifter work, you can make it happen!

5-90,

I totally agree with helping the new guy. Thats kinda why i frquent this site, that plus laid up with broke leg and foot. I just hate putting out but so much info, cause it will be web wheeled and the web guru's will claim personal knowledge of it. Also when I started wheeling my MJ 5 almost 6 yrs ago I had to research and try different things to learn. I think everyone needs to do a lil research/sweat equity to get it right.

The vacuum lines don't have anything to do with internal case function - they're for the mode indicators on the IP (triggered by vacuum switches) and the front axle actuator (vacuum diaphragm - may be overridden with a cable control or simply locked into fully engaged - it was done away with sometime in 1992/1993.)

Leave the vacuum switch in place to plug the hole, put caps on the vacuum nipples on the switch, and call it good.

If you check the speedo gear housing (the bit you remove,) you'll see hashmarks at 90* intervals. You'll see an indicator mark on the case proper.

Next to those hashmarks, you should see number ranges - like "29-32." Check the tooth count on your speedo gear (should be moulded in the top,) and find out which range it fits in. That hash mark should be lined up with the mark on the case.

The pinion housing axis is slightly offset, so that it may be adjusted for different sizes of pinion gear. Since the tooth pitch is constant, the gear diameter has to change to accommodate different tooth counts. Simple physics.

Ergo, the offset pinion housing and marked adjustments (so that the offset of the pinion axis may vary.)

Default yj to xj

Does anyone happen to know if a transfer case from a 94 YJ with an automatic transmission and 4.0 will work on a 92 XJ with a automatic and a 4.0?

Have a 91' 5 speed manual with a Command-Trac 231. If I do a CAD delete, can I swap to a 241? Dana M30/188 front. I believe the ratio is 3.07. Not sure if that matters.

An np241 is a larger case and you really wouldn't gain much by swapping one in. The 241 is a bigger/stronger case but unless you are doing a V8 swap and running huge tires the np231 is strong enough they even used it behind dodge 1500s with the 360 and it holds up good, the low range ratios are the same at 2.72/1 unless you get one from a Wrangler Rubicon then it would be a 4.1/1 low range. If you wanted the lower gearing they do make 4/1 low range kits for the 231.

Cable or electric doesn't matter. Swap the driven units.

No. Because of the spline count.
