Default Transfer case clicking

2000 Cherokee, 4.0L, AW4, NP231 transfer case: Did a search on my particular problem and couldn't find anything identical. Clicking from transfer case that increases with speed. Not super loud but noticable when alongside a retaining wall or building. Does it only when the Jeep is moving 2wd, 4w high and 4w low or when Jeep is sitting still and the transfer case is in neutral (engine running). Has anyone ever run into this? Any ideas as to possible cause?

No, only when the trans is in gear. It has to be driving the t-case for it to make noise. I fixed this one...for now. Drained what appeared to be thin gear lube or maybe a mix of gear lube and atf and replaced it with atf. After a short drive the noise is gone. I don't feel real good about the chances of it staying gone but everything usually stays fixed until it breaks again.
