My recently purchased 2001 Cherokee, with 27K original miles, was making a terrible racket when put into 4 WD. Yesterday this noise resulted in the 4WD shift lever going limp (no resistance moving from 2H all thru to 4L), the Cherokee apparently being stuck in 4H, and the aweful front end racket persisting.

I'm assuming there's a major problem with the transfer case, but given the low miles? Any suggestions?

what case do you have? it sounds like the linkage came loose. get under it and look and see if it popped off. you may still have an internal problem though.the bushings are plastic and very brittle.
