ok I have a 1989 Cherokee Laredo with full time/ part time 4 wheel drive ( select track ) am I right that it is a np242 and not a np231? and what would be the best fluid for it? the Cherokee has 245000 miles on it and I want to change it but if I am correct the fluid for the np242 and the np231 is different. thanks

Yep 242 has the part time, and no 231 and 242 use the same fluid. I put DexIII in my 242. I think DexIII is what was put in at the factory.
However the NP231 and NP242 will run on any ATF you throw at it. It was built for many vehicles and approved for fluids from most manufacturers. Any Dexron above D-II, ATF+3 or greater, Mercon, Multi-Vehicle, etc. Just drain it all out and fill with whatever ATF you have.
