Default Transfer case

Would one from 93 aw4 bolt up to my 99 aw4?

I wasn't sure because of the year they changed the spline count from 21 to 23. I forgot when they did that?

Someone just told me that the 93 got 23 spline, medium input and mine is 23 spline with short input. What does that mean?

AW4 on any Chrysler XJ should be 23-spline medium length. See here:

If there's some problem for some reason the gears are swappable.

So ANY 231 TCs from 1991-2001 will fit on my 99 since its 23 spline and as Salad said, it's all medium input which would be 1.7 inch long? Can anyone verify this?

All 96-01 XJ's: .840" 23 spline input
92-95 XJ's: .750" 23 spline input

^^Taken from the ZJ 242 swap thread on JF, 231 should be the same. IIRC 21 spline was phased out in 91.. which would make the above accurate.

When considering an input swap you need to keep the gear cut change of 94 in mind.

Some will tell you the .750" will work on the .840" trans, i'v never attempted it. 99 might also have different plugs on the speedo sensor etc..

EDIT: You'll have the internal to external slip yoke in this swap too..

So I guess I should get a tc from 98-01 just to make things easier?

I plan to put a sye on it before swapping into my jeep.

You already have the other transfer case? If not.. for ~$200 you could rebuild your current 231 and add the SYE at that time..

I have a sye kit already here waiting to be installed. I thought It would be easier to get a transfer case, install sye on it and make sure it works good then swap out the one on my jeep. Less down time.

What SYE you have? Is it year specific?

Is the AA SYE compatible with a 93 231?

While i'v worked on a few 231's i'm more familiar with 242's. They have an early and late style mainshaft, making the proper SYE year specific. I know some 231's are as well.. might wanna check the part numbers on the AA SYE for compatibility.

That detail could determine that the 93 donor is not what your looking for.

NP231s have the same main shaft actually, there was a tail shaft change in 1996 that makes a difference for some SYEs. The AA one however replaces the output housing completely and bolts up to any year. Something like 1986-2006
