Transer Case oil?
so.. as in my other other, the clunk one, i was trying to locate the source of the noise, the clunk thingy, and I think I've to some extent, today when checking under the Jeep, the u-joints were fine.. but there was no noise coming when I pushed the lever from N to D or to R, but there was some noise, kinda grinding noise.. metallish.. coming from the transfer case, I turned the Jeep off, opened the big oil screw.. and there was no oil in it...
Now, what oil do we use for that? The normal Dexron III Automatic transmission fluid? and how much? Could this be the reason I get clunks when shifting to D or R when its on the road? And when it was lifted up the hydraulic lift, it had no traction and wheels were free and so there was no noise? Too many assumptions but, could it be transfer case? I mean, we aren't using the 4WD.. its just in the 2WD for the normal use and still I get the clunks?

oh, and the Jeep doesn't have a front driveshaft too, the u-joint on the front diff is broken.. no oil in the transfer case, front u-joint broken? The PO was just an idiot who managed break the u-joint and disconnected the driveshaft or he was an even a bigger idiot who managed to something very bad to the transfer case, or the front diff?

yes, it takes dex III atf. As for the noise, it could be the t case. I would put on the e-brake, block the wheels (to be on the safe side )and have someone else sit in it with thier foot on the brake and have them shift it so it makes the noise. You just lay under it and see if thats where its coming from. Thats how I found out mine was bad haha. good luck

I try to match the fluid I put in my T-case with what i put in the trany. This way if I loose a seal I don't have any fluid contamination. The 242 and 231 t-case's are not that picky on fluids..

I honestly can't remember how much goes in them. Mine is a 231 and I filled it with a tranny flush machine so I don't know how much it took. just pour it in til it just starts to run out of the filler hole then put the pulg back in. its just like filling a rear dif.

Yes, I would check them too. The front is a dana 30, you will see a 3/8's square drive plug in the front of the dif cover. Just take it out and make sure the fluid is about level with the bottom of the hole. The rear I think has a rubber plug that you pop out, same deal with how full it should be, but DO NOT put atf in the difs. Also make sure you check them on level ground. Here are some pics of the dif covers where the fill caps are for a dana 30 (second pic) dana 35 (third pic) and c 8.25 (first pic)

if you aren't sure whats in them now you might want to drain them and add new stuff. I run synthetic 85 w140 in mine. also, when you fill the transfer case make sure you are filling it from the plug that is about half way up the case, not the drain one that is at the bottom.

Hahahahahaha
Yeah, I will be draining the old lubricant from the differentials out, and use the one you mentioned or maybe the one mentioned in the FSM, whichever I could find here.
