i got a 97 xj and driving it yesterday from a stop i noticed it would start in 3rd and stay in not shift down... if i manual shift it will work fine... 1st and 2nd gear are still there just not shifting down from a stop... oh and the check engine light came on... i tried to run the codes and i have no power to the port... so instead i unplugged the battery overnight... went to work this morning and it was fine until i got to work (12 miles) then it started again... any idea's guys? thanks for any help!!!

 

Hi there, you should check your fuses and try to determine why your diagnostic port doesn't work. you could have a wiring problem (losing a power supply to the tcu) get your codes and go from there. Hi mileage on your jeep? trans fluid in good shape?

TCU,TPS,Wiring or Shift solenoids will cause this...i just posted a write up how to check all of this from the TCU plug in another thread last week. It sounds to me you have some faulty solenoids.

 

i replaced the tps yesterday night and same thing... when it start to not shift i shut the jeep off and start it and its fine for a few... it has 193,000 miles and the trans fluid is brand new(i work at a shop)... im on my phone so its hard to search... can you get me a link to the write up? thanks for the help guys...

When you come to a stop does the vehicle stall? If not suspect the governor pressure sensor or governor pressure solenoid

 

Double check the TPS plug that goes to the TCU. If it is loose or making poor contact it will have those symptoms.

 

it doesnt stall.... it runs fine... and it doesnt do it all the time...
