Default Trans/tranfer case clunk

My question is can dirty or burnt trans fluid cause a clunk noise in the trany or transfer case. Can't search this on my phone. Googled it and found close threads but not this exact question. It's not drive shaft/ rear end. Drives and shifts fine but makes a clunk from R to D. When cold it is smooth but as the motor warms up it seems to get worse. After a short drive it's pretty bad. Any help will be much appreciated.

Yes, it can. Drain and refill transfer case with Dextron III.

You may have to do it and drive for about 1,000 miles and do it again for best results.

Fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles.

Thanx for the help. Isn't dextrin III trany fluid. Does the transfer case take the same stuff. I think this is the prob because it doesn't clunk till the motor warms up.

Yes, as I said earlier, the transfer case does use Dextron III, which is trans fluid.

Yeah, manual specifies Dexron II/II/Mercon fluid for automatic transmissions and transfer cases

Kinda of sounds like one of my issues. Transmission clunks at extended highway speeds. But at like 75+, nothing less. Seems like the trans anyway, don't know what else it could be... Wonder if a trans flush would help it out.

Yea I would have bet anything that it was the rear end because it does look like I have excessive play in it but after I noticed it getting worse with temp it's got to be the trans or trans case. And I'm not talking about driving down the road warm all I have to do is let it idol till it warms up.
