I got a 86 jeep cherokee with a 2.8 v6 and a auto trans. i want to put a standard trans in it. what would i have to do and what model cherokees can i get it from?

I would almost say the for a 86 you would want to find a tranny from another 86. but im not 100% sure. i think in 87 they changed them a bit. You could probably contact your local jeep dealer and they could probably tell you a more definate answer. but i would almost say it might not be worth all your trouble once you change the wires and consol and everyhting. goodluck

 

to be honest with you - that transmiton is the best part of that jeep.. if you are looking to do a major swap i would be looking for a new motor/trans combo.

 

Don't think for a second that we don't want to help you but only a little knowledge is here among the members. Most is stuff we have read or sources for further info. And finally from our personal experiences but the bottom line is that not too many of us have alot of experience with pre 87 Cherokees. I know quite a bit of stuff about the 87-90s that are called "Renix" Cherokees and some stuff about the early H.O. Cherokees.The 84-86 are out of my comfort zone. Others are better suited to speak and help with later stuff while others are more knowledgeable about the Grand Cherokees.
The statistics are pretty well known or your 86 but the actual experience working on it will be kind of limited. We are usually fast to respond to most any questions but you have a Cherokee that falls into a special catagory. Hope you understand, goodoleboy.
