Default trans swap

Hello all, i have a 2001 cherokee with a 98 cherokee 4x4 trans and tranfer case, that has 200,000 miles, it has started slipping in first gear. I have the 2001 trans that came in the jeep that has 1300 miles. Is it just a matter of unbolting the tail housing from 2001 and bolting it to the transfer case or does the output shaft need to be swapped from the 98 trans? Thanks for any help you my give.

Someone correct me if im wrong, but it should just bolt.

'98 and '01 came with the same engine and transmission options, so they should be the same.

They changed the head to accept an ignition coil, upgraded intake and cooling system. That's all to my knowledge.

Here I'm a total puter jocky. Yes, there may well be a difference for the PCM between 98 and 01. There were changes there. Was for smog though! no idea if they changed the speed sensor. Wait, & wait. You wanna put the right one back? And only first slipping? Nice pink fluid?

Somebody......why only first gear? I'm learning...The AW4 has three solenoids, one locks the torque converter. The other two do something else. The TPS input to the PCM and TCU controls the other two, right?

My AW4 barely uses first. I'll wear out long before that does. Not knowing ****, I gotta wonder if it isn't a wire toa solonoid, or a solenoid. Is it the grey plug behind the dipstick? I'd clean that and look into the letrics to the solonoids...

I mean that's something I don't get. I suppose the TCU activates the other two solenoids, to engage, likely by powering, but maybe grounding the coil. Anyway seeing that the trans side of the TPS is functioning seems to make sense.

Thanks for the replys it sounds like i need to check electrics before i start changing trans. Didn't know solenoids activated the gears. Thanks for the help.

Yea...over my head. Interesting Unknown went the other way without a problem. is your fluid OK? Pink& pretty, or colored and maybe smelly? So there's this:

AW4 operation..Radi
1st gear - solenoid 1 ON, solenoid 2 OFF
2nd gear - solenoid 1 ON, solenoid 2 ON
3rd gear - solenoid 1 OFF, solenoid 2 ON
4th gear - solenoid 1 OFF, solenoid 2 OFF
Lockup - Solenoid 3

So.. if solenoid 1 were bad, 1st and second gear would have problems. If solenoid 2 were bad, 2nd and 3'rd would have problems.
I can't figure which would cause a second gear-only problem. Seems more of a control/TCU problem? Or perhaps a voltage/ground problem that isn't allowing BOTH solenoids to operate simultaneously?

I guess I might suggest anyone here take a look at this AW4 stuff here:
