trans shifting problems!
So here's my problem. Ill drive up to about 45mph and get to a stop light and completely stop. And then when it turns green and I step on the gas i'm still in 4th grear and acceleration is terrible. And when I go to pass people or go up hills it won't down shift. It doesn't do it all the time but maybe a few times a week. Any ideas? I don't really wanna take it to a mechanic. Any and all help is appreciated!

Have you tried adjusting your kick down cable? really easy to do and it may be your answer.

TPS and kick down cable are the 2 most important items controlling your shift points. You may need to test or replace your TPS but only use OEM Jeep TPS others have caused problems.
This may help though I'm not sure if your 96 TPS is the same as the one in the link:

replace the oil and filter first, if you've never done it then, that is probably the issue.
everybody is always trying to find other issues. This is the most common issue in automatic transmissions. People think they are maintenance free. Its the easiest thing to do. It costs under 100$ to do and you will need to do it enventually anyways.

First thing is first.
Go get a scan and see if any codes pop up. My tranny was doing the same w/no CEL. Scanned it and solenoid b was bad.
So, could be tps, tcm, or solenoid.
