SOO back to the original problem... I got nowhere today because I could not find the TCU. I replaced all the radiator fluid and flushed the system also and now I'm drastically leaking radiator fluid as well! This thing has gotten some serious problems from the PO. I think I am going to have to resort to dropping it off at a mechanic this week and see if they can do anything because this is BLOWING my mind!
Never to many problems, and taking it to a mechanic will cost you more.. all there is for a major leak is hoses, and gaskets. The worst thing you could have is a bad radiator or worst possible thing imaginable cracked head and blown head gasket..

Nothing on the trans yet..? what about NSS(nuetral saftey switch) ive seen that thing get pretty clogged up..

Dont give up, find all your problems then pick a day to fix it.

Yea im usually not one to give up especially on working on vehicles and i have done some pretty major repairs but this thing is throwing me for such a loop!! I just got a 130 page document on tests to run to test all the components of the tranny from my uncle so I am going to start with that and see whats up happening from there. I just feel rushed because in the mean time I have no other mode of transportation and have to bum rides to work.

also if i do have to swap the trans can i get one from a 4wd and just not include the transfer case? Also which years can i use?

so i found the TCU and unplugged it last night. Drove a couple miles to test it out and it seemed to be running just fine so I drove to my fiances place and was exciting that i have at least narrowed it down to an electrical issue. Well... I went to hop in to go to work this morning and there was a mean grinding noise.. I start on my way and get a mile down the road before it starts to slip out of gear and leave me once again stranded on the road...

So I am assuming I need a new transmission. Is there anything else that I should be checking before I take the plunge into buying a new tranny? Its pretty ridiculious since this xj only has 68,000 miles on it. Also I have a 2wd.. do I need to get another 2wd tranny? and what years will fit into a 96.

If you're replacing the tranny then i would go ahead and do the 4wd swap. The fact my tranny isnt that old is why i havent did the swap on mine yet. Pretty sure all you need is tranny, transfercase, both driveshafts, and the axle. And from what i understand everything bolts right up

When you do the tranny fluid and filter check adjust the bands on the tranny. I adjust the bands at every fluid/filter change on my ZJ.

On my tranny there are 2 band adjustments to be made; front band (kickdown) and rear band (low-reverse). The rear band you access when you remove the pan. Looking up at the tranny, there is a band lever with a lock nut and adjusting screw. You need the specs for your transmission. What you do is loosen the lock nut and tighten the adjustment screw to the specified torque. Then you back off the adjustment screw the specified turns and tighten the lock nut.

Like in my case the rear band adjustment is torque to 72 in. lb. then back off 3 5/8 turns.

The front adjustment is on the drivers side of the tranny and is a little bit harder to access. These adjustments are recommended at 30,000 miles or 24 months.

You need the specs for your transmission. Post your tranny model number and I will see if I have the info. Mine is a 42RE.

So I drained all the fluid again today and even ran some more clean fluid through the tranny to make sure all the old fluid was out. I cleaned up, started it up, and went driving and... it did it again. The problem still exists. I unplugged the TCU and drove around and it seemed to work for awhile but then it began to slip out of gear again. I think I am just going to have to swap the whole tranny out because I am at my whits end with this thing at this point.

ANY SUGGESTIONS???
