ATF+4 is a synthetic, I run Amsoil universal AFT in my AW4/Np231 with no issues. Those who have had "problems" with ATF+4/any other synthetic fluid in their AW4 apparently had bigger issues beforehand. It just like saying you should NEVER change your trans. fluid.

im relatively confident that the motor takes a 5w30 or 10w30.....right?

the tcase takes Dex3.....that point has at least been hammered home to me

im lost on the rear diff though, im 90% sure mine is the cryco one.
The W (winter weight) you run is really up to you/where you live. IF you live in a place that is warm enough you could run straight 30 or 40 if you wanted.
IF you have LSD, then run at least 75w-110, if not 75w-140 +fricition modifier. I run 75w-110 Amsoil SevereGear front and rear, no issues.

Dexron II is no longer around, so you use Dexron III.

I dont know what to put in a manual trans, Cause I dont have one.

Edit: magator beat me.
wrong atf +4 aw4 is fine.. look at the tsb released in 2006

ATF+4 can handle more heat than Dextron. Its been proven... I have used it in my own aw4 for a long while now...
here is the TSB

NOTE
:**AWA (Asian Warner) transmission are now included in this Service Bulletin. ATF+4(R) is recommended for AW-4 (Asian Warner)
transmissions** NOTE :This Service Bulletin DOES NOT apply to Sprinter transmissions, Crossfire transmissions, MK/PM vehicles equipped with Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and WG vehicles equipped with a diesel engine (sales code ENF) and a W5J400 or NAG1 transmission (sales code DGJ). DISCUSSION:
ATF+4(R) - (Type 9602) is being used as factory fill for Chrysler Group automatic transmissions. ATF+4(R) is recommended for all vehicles equipped with Chrysler Group automatic transmissions EXCEPT FOR THOSE LISTED IN THE NOTE ABOVE.
NOTE :ATF+4(R) must always be used in vehicles that were originally filled with ATF+4(R). DO NOT USE ANY OTHER FLUID. NOTE :ATF+4(R) is backward compatible with ATF+3, ATF+2, and ATF+. Additionally, ATF+4(R) can be used to top off vehicles that used ATF+3, ATF+2, or ATF+. NOTE :If ATF+4® is used to service models originally filled with ATF+3, ATF+2, and ATF+ the fluid maintenance schedules listed for that model does not change. The service interval currently in effect for a given model should continue to be followed. Refer to the Service or Owners manual for maintenance schedule directions. In general terms, If ATF+, ATF+2 or ATF+3 was the recommended fluid, it is now recommended to use ATF+4®
BENEFITS
^ Better anti-wear properties ^ Improved rust/corrosion prevention ^ Controls oxidation ^ Eliminates deposits ^ Controls friction ^ Retains anti-foaming properties ^ Superior properties for low temperature operation FLUID COLOR
Mopar ATF+4(R) has exceptional durability. However, the red dye used in ATF+4(R) is not permanent; as the fluid ages it may become darker or appear brown in color. ATF+4(R) also has a unique odor that may change with age. With ATF+4(R) fluid, color and odor are no longer indicators of fluid condition and do not necessarily support a fluid change.

I too was skeptical about the whole motor oil deal until i spoke to a service adviser at Jeep! as well as seemingly endless searches on the web.
The problem lies in kinematic viscosity. The hypoid gears are designed to work with a specific tolerance at operative temperatures. This tolerance is given by the ability of the lubricant to create a film thick enough for the drive gear involute curve to roll over the driven gear tooth and reduce friction. At 100 °c a 75w 90 oil has a kinematic viscosity of 17 centistokes while a 10w40 drops down to 4-5 centistokes. At that viscosity a hypoid gear is working too near to the other gear and the projectual tolerance is not respected anymore. The result of this friction is a further heat increase that takes the oil near to it's flash point temperature where the synchromesh wear out fast.
A SAE 75W 90 gear oil is usually a totally sinthetic fluid that does not contain sulfur additives.
You have spoken to a mechanical engineer here that designs engines, transmissions and drive trains for a well known car builder brand.

The Rooster, we already said Dexron II (not dextron) or better.
AW4, the AW stands for Aisin Warner ( no such asian warner lol), the company is a Japanese subsidiary of Borg Warner.

Royal Purple does not recommend Synchromax in the AX-15. They do recommend 10W40 for no problems, 10W30 if your tranny is a bit worn and 5W30 if it shifts really ****ty.

A quart of synchromax costs about 15 bucks. A quart of 10W30 costs about 7.

Pretty much blows your theory that they are only interested in money.

That's $7.41 a quart. I can get it at National Speed for about the same.
