tranny stuck in 3rd

Default tranny stuck in 3rd

Was running down the high way the other day and.was towing my boat and i had it in 3 going up a hill tried to put it back in drive and got to reverse insteaf and locked up and now i think I'm stuck in 3 even when I'm in normal drive anyone know what could be going on and how to fix it?

Replace the transmission.

Agreed, torque converter is now full of metal, stick a fork in it. Don't forget to flush out the cooler or the new transmission may not last very long.

I recall shifting out of drive into reverse (don't ask) going about 50kph (35-ish mph)....
Despite the sounds the trans made to inform me that this feral attempt to kill it was not appreciated, the AW4 has never let me down....and in return, I promised to never try and test it's loyalty ever again.

I always assumed there was some sort of a lock preventing that to happen but I now I know.... Glad I never checked that assumption...

Yes all true time for a new trans, torque converter from what you describe and if it were me I would replace the transmission cooler with a new B&M or something like it instead of trying to clean out a stock one. The lines usually have shavings in them also (I "don't" know about the AW4 but years of other trans going away is my experience).

There is kind of, if you don't depress the button on the shifter and simply move the lever forward. The worst that can happen is you end up in neutral.
