Beginning in 1998 selected Chrysler products began rolling off the assembly line with an advanced new security system known as Security Key Immobilizer System (SKIS). Most WJ Grand Cherokee's are equipped with this system.: http://www.wjjeeps.com/sentry.htm

Yep.

Easy identifiers: grey keys and a slash-key (sometimes just a round-dot) security light in the cluster on start-up.

It's a very effective system. It keeps low-tech column-stripping car thieves from driving away with your Jeep. They had better bring a tow truck.

Most systems are ineffective against a high-tech thief, but the SKIM (and SKIS) systems work very well. Even a key special-ordered from MOPAR and cut by VIN won't start your Jeep without first being "learned" to the SKIM.

yup, my tj has this.

for the first time ever, it decided to trip on me yesterday. both my keys wouldn't work.

it would start, then quit. my dash indicator would flash.

after a minute, it started and has been fine since.

at least i know it works.

200 bux for a replacement/spare key tho.

Sentry anti theft Skim module ect
I had this problem on and off for a while. every few months it would start and shut off after approx 3 seconds. then would be fine for a while/month or 3. Then it started doing it every other day, sometimes wouldnt restart for 1-3 hours. Well, with all the suggestions - "you need PCM , Skim module, new key bla bla bla" Remove your steering cover halves (one phillips screw bottom) and pull apart plastic halfs. (It will take a good tug to overcome plastic tabs, hence you wont brake anything) Look at wires coming out of skim module, follow down..when i moved them around (going down the column, tied them upward with a zip tie to some other wires above, it stopped doing it for months. It sometimes comes back very seldom, and I just move the skim module wires around and it leaves for months. I think its just a broken wire inside insulation from skim to computer that worked and worked from moving tilt steering wheel up and down for years. I am a big believer in ---> lotta times its a simple inexpensive thing and I dont shotgun expensive parts. Its the wiring charlie. Hope this helps some poor old cheap sob like me.... Peace.

There are many theories out there why the immobiliser feature sometimes goes wandering on it own....many rituals out there people claimed worked for them. Some sad stories about jeeps rendered useless as well because of this.
In the end, there is nil known fix, other than trying a PCM without the immob feature....however I never hear back from these people whether it worked or not. Like stated, it's intermittent, completely random, and sometimes doesn't play up for months....I know, and always glad when I start and it keeps running after those first 2-3 seconds...

It was standard equipment on my 04 "Overland" as well, found out right after I bought it and needed an extra key from the "StealerShip"
