ok so i have a 1997 xj and my tranny is bad i found a new one picking it up later this week.

What can i do to make it work better ?
what kind of upgrades are out there ?

First off, there's a good bit of info on this simply by googling, so try starting there.

First, put in a trans cooler. AW4's run hot and heat kills transmissions.

RAdesigns has a manual shifter.

The AW4 is the same thing as the toyota A340 trans. Anything you see for the A340 should work for the AW4.

The only real upgrades are a modified valve body and HD clutch packs. Valve body can be had for $600 if you send yours in or adding $1000 for a core charge. The HD rebuild kit can be had for ~$550.

However, these involve teardown/rebuild. Good luck.
