Default tranny fan switch?

on this 89XJ I just scored, I came across a switch on the bottom panel of the dash. right around the right knee area. it looks like it is missing a know, its a pull type (down) and activates the tranny cooler fan. WHY? is this a common fix for a factory problem? Is it factory? This is my first jeep (yay) so i'm stretching my wings

Just something the PO installed......maybe he towed a trailer or did a lot of slow off-roading. Tranny cooler is a common aftermarket install......most coolers probably don't have a fan though. Kinda like installing big tires.

so the tranny cooler IS aftermarket. I felt like it was a factory thing, like the no cap radiator system I am starting to fear. I guess I should get a manual for this damn thing, any service manual recommendations? Any sure no-nos?

Your particular tranny cooler/fan combo is probably aftermarket....the XJ came with a very small oil-to-air auxiliary cooler IF it had the optional factory tow package (no dedicated tranny cooler efan, though). U can find Fac Serv Manuals (the real deal, not Haynes, Chiltons) and owners manuals on ebay etc. and worth every penny, IMHO. The XJ will probably continue to depreciate, I doubt seriously if the factory shop manuals will. One for sure yes, yes........plenty of maintenance.
