Default tracking oil leak culprate

let's see if i can explain this one.

96 cherokee sport 4.0 152,000 miles. took it on an 1hr 1/2 trip over the weekend and all was fine.

on the way back i got stuck in an hour long traffic jam temp was good oil pressure good truck running good.

after the traffic cleared up i bring it up to about 75 mph and start seeing smoke pouring out the back and oil on my back window and bumpers. no check engine light and truck still running good.

after i get it home since it was 3 a.m i just quickly look under the truck and everything is coated with oil and i was 2 quarts down.

i wiped everything down put oil in and started it up warmed it up drove it a bit and nothing leaking.

wondering if a seal or gasket heated up during the traffic jam then let loose after it cooled down. but nothing leaking as of right now.

Look at the valve cover and oil filter adapter and oil pressure switch. Before you assume it's a bad main seal, be positive it is not from the other items listed. Are you sure that you were not low on oil before the trip? What is condition of the Trans fluid??

oil level was good trans fluid and valve cover were changed before winter i ran my hand all around the valve cover and it's dry checked the trans fluid and it's good. doesn't seem to be and oil spots in the engine bay.

i do think the oil filter adapter sweats never leaves a puddle but if i feel under it i do get some fresh oil on my hands

also the rear main seal will drip one or two drops here and there.

where im confused it the amount of smoke and oil that poured out suddenly then stopped is weird i would think if it came out that in that short amount of time it would keep doing it it's not like it fixed itself right? lol

I had a similar incident happen a few years ago with my '97. It happened nearly in identical circumstances during a trip to NC.

It turned out not to be oil at all as we first thought (including a Jeep service department). It was transmission fluid. There was a pump seal failure that allowed fluid to be forced out when the tranny got hot during sitting in traffic and when it got up to speed and the pressure increased normally, it forced the fluid out and it went all over the undercarriage of the vehicle and spewed out of the rear along with a James Bond quality of smoke from off of the pipes. I really felt sorry for a motorcyclist behind me once on I-77 when this happened and he obviously wore transmission fluid.

The service manager and the techs were stumped at first and it took Chrysler getting involved to figure out the problem. They also believed it the rear main and fixed it, but ended up eating the repair when it happened again after it was fixed the first time. The fluid dipstick didn't show a major drop in fluid levels on the tranny which confused everyone even more. I hadn't overfilled it so that wasn't the problem either. I'd look this way along with other possible issues, but this sounds way too much like what happened to me to be anything else.
