i'd get an 80grit 4 1/2 inch flap disc and use a grinder.
just be careful not to take too much off. just taper the end slightly to smooth those bad threads off.

and don't forget to wear safety glasses. maybe some gloves too.

Kicker. Just went a looked at it again, one side of the head is mushroomed from the hammer. can that still be ground down? Or would thread cutting be more appropriate?

The second thing you screwed up on is buying a lift from fat bobs. They are a local shop near me and their parts and service both suck.

Parts seem decent. Not sure about tech support though. Why are they bad? I thought it was pretty good, but if you have warnings, let me know!

Okay, lift done. Neighbor brought over a cutoff grinder and a wire welder. cut bad threads, threaded nut on just fine, then instead of cotter pin, welded inside nut. Took it for a drive, and it's perfect. No DW, got it up to 85, and nothin. Love it!
