tps
i am looking at buying a 1990 cherokee 4x4 and the jeep will not shift out of first very easily it wants to just stay in first forever... but will eventually shift and is fine from there on up.. the man that owns the jeep said that it is the TPS (throttle position sensor) and i was wondering if that sounds right or if he is trying to get me...

from what i have read it has nothing to do with shifting i could be wrong thoe but you should first check the tranny fluid.... the TPS controls an regulates how much air is need to mix with gas an tells the PCM if your at closed or open throttle google search it thats where i found it an does it hesatated in reverse

Yes, the TPS does affect the shifting. The flat three pin connector supplies information for the engine, and the square four pin connector supplies information to the tranny. It is easy to test the TPS to see if it's working correctly though as long as you have a DMM.
Here is a link to checking/adjusting the TPS.

tps can cause the problem. If it is telling the computer that you have your foot on the floor, the trans won't shift until redline. If it is the tps, then it will want to downshift too soon if you slow down a bit. I had the same problem a while back and it was the tps.
Good luck.
