This weekend I'm looking to go pick up the 86 parts XJ I just bought. I would like to use my 90 XJ to tow it home with.

The parts vehicle has no tranny or transfer case,but someone did stab a Chevy 350 in it,replacing the stock 2.8 liter.

Would this parts jeep be too heavy to tow flat( all 4 wheels on the ground) with my 90 XJ?

The distance traveled will only be about 10th miles.

My 90 has an aftermarket receiver and an external tranny cooler,if that matters...

You will be using the brakes on the 90 to stop both if using a towbar. if using two ppl and a strap and the brakes on the other one work then as long a the one being tow has some experiance doing so it should not be too bad. are you going 10 miles or a 10th of a mile? and around here dont forget ppl drive like nuts and will cut you off when you tow i think they are looking to do it on purpose.

I'm going from palominas to around delios,and I'm planning on having someone in the 86 and ill be pulling it with a tow strap

10 miles on flat road should be okay.

ehhh sounds a little dangerous. who knows if the brakes on that jeep are guaranteed to hold up. now power wise.. yeah your jeep will pull it alright. but I seriously would recommend trying to find a trailer of some sort..

Yea the jeep will pull it fine. I agree the brakes on the other. I would make sure they work and whom ever is in it has eaten their wheaties it will be manuel brakes forsure.

I have flat towed with a strap many, MANY times. I have never had an issue.

Just be careful, drive slow, and take as many side roads as possible.

do it early morning before it gets hot out and minimal traffic on the road. not at dusk, if something does go wrong you want the light coming not going

I've towed and have been towed plenty of times. Just never done it in my Cherokee. That's why I ask. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.

So I just towed the parts vehicle home.My 90 struggled a little on a long hill,but it did very well overall. No overheating or brake issues. I'm very happy with my 90's performance.

A trick i learned when towing muscle cars around in the 70's ( they were HEAVY!).....get a chain and piece of pipe....thread the chain through the pipe, and make sure the chain is secured on BOTH ends....works real good!
