Towing almost 2000 miles anything i should know?
Hey guys,
Well im moving from fort lauderdale, fl back to Rochester, MN in a couple of weeks. Close to 2000 miles.
I have a friend who im going to be dropping off in ohio with his harley davidson on the way. Ive never towed anything that heavy for that long and i was wondering if there is anything i should know in advance.
his bike weighs about 510#s
The gross trailer weight is 580#s ( dont know the toung weight but its a 4x8' trailer )
my cargo witch will be in and ontop of the jeep will probably weigh 500 - 800 lbs i figure and no more.
Anything i should know? anything i should do in advance??
Im in a 94 2wd XJ with 149000 on it
Thanks in advance

Only use over drive on the flats. In the hills 3rd only.
When you reach your final stop with in a few days I'd get a trany filter, fluid change to be on the safe side.

tranny cooler for sure. the stock on doesnt cut it. make sure to also check tire pressure everytime you stop to get gas.

So the total weight of the bike + trailer is only 1100 lbs., that's not much, you should have no problem, would help if you waited and made the trip when the weather is cooler though.
Go to the car wash and spray your radiator fins completely clean, it couldn't hurt and will help if they're dirty\clogged.
You'll be surprised at the aerodynamic drag that bike will produce, so making the trip at only 55-60 will help as well.
If it were me I'd change my oil\filter right before I went. Make sure you've got your tire pressure at close to the max stated on the tire, trailer tires as well.

def the tranny cooler, i would consider rear air shocks if you dont plan to lift it soon cause they are super cheap as far as im concerned

Making him ride the bike would make a huge difference, but I know most people don't actually ride their Harleys, they have one so they can park it out in front of the local Starbucks and say "That's my Harley"

you are very right about that, I used to be the assistant service manager at a harley dealer down here. But most of the guys i hang with only own bikes so they are on them every day lol. either way a long ride on a 94 sportser would suck

Well i talked to my friend and told him we would not be towing the bike, and hes cool with that, that means ill only have the trailer and maybe a set of rims/ tires and a 27" TV in the trailer, with the jeep packed solid so that should be cool
