I tow an Aliner fold-up camper that weighs (per CAT scale) loaded & ready for camping 2500 pounds and tows very well. But in order to experience the level of towing performance, the trailer has electric brakes and I have added to the trailer a high quality top rated weight distribution & anti sway hitch (the only one guaranteed not to sway). Prior to adding the WD & AS hitch, I experienced exactly what you are talking about, in fact it scared the crap out of me. With this set-up towing has been stress free and enjoyable. I suspect such a set-up is not in the cards for the OP as this may be just a one time or infrequent occurence.
if I towed a trailer more often then I currently do Id probably go with that set up but as right now I tow a trailer once in a blue moon.
