Need to know the weight of the Honda Civic and the weight of the trailer. The Cherokee's have a towing capacity of 5000 pounds, if it has a towing package (tranny cooler, heavy duty radiator, full size spare, synthetic 75-140 lube in rear diff and probably something I am forgetting) otherwise I believe the tow capacity is 3500 lbs. Also keep in mind you need to subtract from the tow capacity drivers weight over 150lbs, any passngers and cargo. Another consideration is how far you are towing, cross town or longer? Good idea to have trailer brakes.

you CAN do it, but if you can find something else to pull it i would. You could probably rent a truck from Uhaul.

how heavy is the trailer? Is it a full on trailer or just for the front wheels?

I towed my 97 geo metro across Oregon on a full steel 12ft trailer with a steel bed... I know I shouldnt have but it hauled it well. I have towed 6k pounds not including the weight of the same trailer scrapping metal. Its sketchy but it will get the job done. Its stopping thats scary, not going. I just give people a **** ton of room in front of me. I have a manual, and going from a dead stop is hell with 6k pounds, but when towing the geo I dont have any going problems, just stopping.

no way, you better figure a little more time, 4 1/2 is straight drive time, you will embarking on a dangerous tow,and there is no safe way for you to make that time with your rig as the tow-pig

How do you figure that if his rig indeed meets the requirements to tow 5000 lbs. and he is towing 2300 lbs?

last time I towed a trailer full of scrap metal it pulled me all over the road and I wasnt oven close to the 5000lb limit couldnt safely go over 50mph. Im sitting at 3in of lift and 31 goodyear wranglers. My advice is dont do it.

the car and trailer far exceed 2300 and with the lift, tires, wheels, his rig prolly weighs more than stock, so that reduces yer towing capacity, i didnt say he couldnt, he shoudnt, due to the aggraveted handling characteristics, lack of braking distance he will incur etc. and if ya always pull max weight, you will, prematurely wear yer rig out!!

I tow an Aliner fold-up camper that weighs (per CAT scale) loaded & ready for camping 2500 pounds and tows very well. But in order to experience the level of towing performance, the trailer has electric brakes and I have added to the trailer a high quality top rated weight distribution & anti sway hitch (the only one guaranteed not to sway). Prior to adding the WD & AS hitch, I experienced exactly what you are talking about, in fact it scared the crap out of me. With this set-up towing has been stress free and enjoyable. I suspect such a set-up is not in the cards for the OP as this may be just a one time or infrequent occurence.

If the total weight exceeds the 2300 lbs the OP quoted I agree with you and would be best not to do it and find a more suitable rig to tow it. Otherwise the OP should have electric brakes and will have to take it slow.
