towing
I have a big tex 50LA 16 ft tandem axle trailer I think it weights 1500#s, would it be within my 2000 xj's limits to pull this trailer with a four wheeler or lumber, mainly just using it as a truck bed, my jeep is an auto, 4.0 I don't know what gears it has, and I put a hitch on it.
It would be a pretty good idea to invest in an trans cooler, especially is you have some decent inclines where you live. The AW4 doesn't like heat but no auto does for that matter. Just for reference your jeep has 3.55 gears(98.9% Chance)

We don't really have any inclines here, but I would like to add a cooler to it anyway. The rpms run almost 2000 @ 55 - 60 mph, I was wondering what gears it had, it is getting about 17 mpg also.

If pulling anything heavier than say 1000 lbs a transmission cooler becomes mandatory equipment.
Plate style coolers are better than tube and fin.
A cheap way to get one is to pull one off a early 90's ford explorer. It fits in the xj very well and provides plenty of cooling.
I did mine by following this setup...

When adding the cooler, this would be the perfect time to service the rest of the cooling system if it hasnt been done already, new thermostat, water pump if you dont know how old the current one is, spend the extra couple bucks for a new one not reman.
They say past personal experiences will affect future performance. OK, enough of that. When you tow, STAY AWAY from your Overdrive. I've learned the hard way that towing with an XJ in Overdrive will cause heating problems. I was running down the freeway, going up a short hill, in Overdrive, and noticed I had apparently ran through a fog bank, although no fog was in the area. I pulled over, and found that when in Overdrive, with a load, the AW4 shoots ATF out the dipstick. Not a lot of fun. Let rig set for a few minutes, took off OUT of Overdrive, not another problem. #1 Tow with Overdrive off. #2 Biggest cooler you can find and install. hope this helps
Thanks for all the comments, I am going to get a cooler, but I decided not to pull that trailer with the jeep and chance getting the trans too hot. I am building me a small 4 X 8 out of an old boat trailer just for the jeep.
