Default Towing with 0331 head

I want to haul my 19 foot boat up to Canada(1500 miles one way) but I have a 2000 XJ with the dreaded 0331 head. I have seen other posts where members have installed a tranny cooler but I don't really want to obstruct any airflow to my rad. The boat doesn't weigh more than 2000lbs but am I still pushing my luck?

I would put a trans cooler on; make sure you have changed your coolant recently and not worry too much.

If your vehicle has been maintained there shouldn't be a problem. If you are attempting to make up now for past neglect, you probably want to drive something else.

Make sure your cooling system is good! Replace unknowns and old stuff, flush the system. A tranny cooler does a lot more for your Jeeps health than you think: normally the crap factory design transfers a lot of transmission heat into your engine as well. Adding a cooler makes everything run better. Stay out of OD unless on flat terrain. But really, if it starts to overheat, let it cool off.

Jeep parts are expensive up here best to do your maintenance and a simple upgrade

Factory auxiliary tranny coolers on virtually every make/model truck that offers one is mounted in front of the rad/cond. Auxiliary tranny coolers don't cause engine overheating.
