Maintenance-wise, which covers most XJs on the road
- New soft brake lines
- New fluid
- Make damn sure there are no leaks
- Ceramic friction and new rotors (semi-metallic sucks)
- New hardware for calipers and shoes so that they move freely without binding

Upgrade-wise
- Disc brakes in the rear
- Proper proportioning valve for discs
- Dual-diaphragm booster if your XJ is '95 or older (Might have the year wrong)
- WJ knuckles up front, much larger rotor, lots of labor too

I've owned many different utility trailers and most come with no brakes or on one axle with one. They are easy to add to most all have a look at Redneck Trailer they handle about every trailer part you can think of. I've used them for over 20 yrs.

All great advice,and thank you. SOO sorry I didn't see them until just now (I didn't get the email notice of replies,and haven't logged on very much this past month).

Did a complete braking system servicing indeed (new lines,pads/rotors,etc,etc-most of what you recommended Salad ),and went through the cooling system by necessity (wound up with a complete servicing,as well as a few tweaks to it as well).

It's a camper,not a utility trailer (I've yanked those with various loads-all under 500lbs or so mind you,since owning the Jeep),and it does indeed have it's own drum brakes,so had a brake controller installed as well. Took it for a 30 mile out (curvy/hilly 2 lane) and then back (interstate at 62-68MPH) today,it did well. Of course,I wasn't "pushing it" very hard or anything,which I would not do anyways. Will be dragging it on a 3 hour (3 hours without considering the slower trip while towing ) trip down to Pigeon Forge for the holidays this week (leaving Thursday,coming back late Sunday). My folks will be following us this trip (all going together,have a'joining spots reserved) in his new Silverado Z71 and their 38'er camper/TT,so if anything goes wrong,I'll have help fixing it,LOL :P
