Depends on how high your trailer sits.

Went back and read my message. Didn't see anything about calling people names.
Then you post pulling large trailers with heavy equipment WITHOUT a problem. Had to make an assumption that you might know something.

Then went further back and found your "Lucky mine sucks" post.
What are you towing that makes it suck? Car trailer? Boat? Utility trailer?
How each one is loaded will effect how it will tow. If your trailer sways AT ANY SPEED it's loaded wrong.

I have a 4.5 inch lift and my drop down is 8" to haul my enclosed 10' trailer.
You'll need to go as far down as to make your trailer sit level on the hitch.
If it is tilted too high the centre of gravity will be wrong and your trailer will sway.

You must be able to but a ton of stuff in that 10" trailer.

Size: 84.6 KBNot a XJ, but I've pulled a 22" car trailer all over the place with all kinds of loads on it. XJs actually have a bit of advantage, IMO, when loaded right due to the leaves in the rear. The 5.9 has more than enough power, but the coils don't like a load at all.
x100 on educating yourself about what your vehicle can safely handle, or more importantly what the driver can handle. For medium duty loads, I think an XJ or ZJ for that matter makes a great tow rig.

Aluminum trailer?
No, its steel, fiberglass shield and aluminum fenders though, it weighs around 2000 lbs unloaded. ZJ 5.9 is rated to tow 5,000~6,000? I think. With a load distributing hitch, tranny cooler and extra pusher fan in front of rad/condenser, I've exceeded that on occasion. Trailer brakes are absolutely necessary, IMO no matter how small the load when pulling. Don't like exceeding the limit, but has been done. I use the F-350 when the big loads need moving.

I've seen mention of folks towing 20' Pontoon boats...

Would you tow this?

Pontoons usually pull pretty goofy, they're pretty light except for the motor weight all at the rear. We pull our pontoon out of the water with the jeep only because its 4wd and none of our trucks are. Most pontoon trailers I've seen wouldn't be worth a damn pulling any distance.

I use the Jeep to move it around the yard, like I was doing in this picture, but I'd never hit the road with it.

Transmission would be toast in no time and there's no way the Jeep would be able to stop it.

There's no sense in pulling something that you can't stop in a reasonable amount of time.

Id agree. What type of pontoon you got?

It's an 18' 1996 Crest with a 50 hp Johnson. Goes a whopping 16 mph.

We just got it last month.

I've spent the last week adding a nice stereo system, lights everywhere, added a battery to the circuit and other little stuff.

I've been thinking about getting a pontoon boat next year. This thread makes me think otherwise. I wouldn't have anything but an XJ to tow it with....
