I towed this about 150 miles with an XJ...

Plenty of power to get out on the highway, but I limited my speed to about 60. The most nerve racking part was stopping it. Launching/retrieving on sandy/rocky ramps was no problem either.

Made a few short pulls with this rig too. No brakes on the trailer, but I was cautious and she handled it fine.

I have a 2000 XJ 4.0 and for the past three years have been lugging around a 22' catalina (~2400 lb) and a 20' pontoon each summer. I take the sailboat on an 8 hour trip each summer, and have been cruising at 70mph with ease. Just be sure you allow enough room to stop, or the boat may start to push back :/

Anybody that has had problems towing anything behind an XJ I suggest you go to the nearest trailer sale yard and ask if they can suggest a drivers training course.
I can't believe how many times I've pulled over to help someone with a trailer that said this was their first time and didn't know a thing about towing.
It's not rocket science but you do need to know a few things.
Out of ALL the threads I read about towing I can't remember ANYONE mentioning tongue weight. If you don't know what that is I suggest you NOT pull a trailer!

Im very familiar with towing a trailer. I started out towing a goose neck trailer with a front end loader had to go thru Atlanta GA during rush hour traffic. So I know what I am doing with a trailer. Been towing them for 4-5 years now.

The tongue weight on my trailer is only 4,000 pounds. Pulls great.

Did that sound like it applied to you?
Obviously you just may know more than the average joe.
So why are you taking it personally?

Obviously someone who shouldn't be towing trailers of any kind.
If you put the max tongue weight on, your frame would bend!

Please read this web site and then come back and tell us what class your hitch is and what your tongue weight should be!

http://www.stowaway2.com/Trailer-Hitch-Basics.aspx

BTW the MAX towing (NOT TONGUE) weight for my 2000 XJ is 4500 lbs. (according to the sticker on my door) and I have the factory tow pkg.
That's not to say you can't exceed that but you'd better be knowing what your doing.

No, my tongue weight is 4,000 pounds. I weighed it just last week. The trailer and it's load weighs around 12,000 pounds. I got trailer brakes so it's all good. It's a goose neck trailer but it works fine on a regular hitch with a longer neck.

My hitch is a class 2 hitch. It's the 1.25" hitch but I braced it to the hatch so it's plenty strong.

It seemed aimed at anyone who said their XJ didnt handle well with a trailer behind it and seeing as I was one of those people figured Id say that your assumption of us all being idiots with a trailer.

Not to hijack but what hitch should you use on the cherokee with 3 inch lift 2 inch drop down or is that too low for hauling?
