Default Tow hitch mount holes

I know I saw this about a month ago. Did search; but came up blank.

How far back can I go from 2000/01 XJ and still have the same tow hitch
mount holes ???

Finally found an OEM Mopar/Jeep hitch that is mid-late 80s..

thanks, Randy

I bought a curt trailer hitch kit designed for my year xj, but it's a pita to bolt it in. You have to use metal wire to get the bolts inside the frame rails... I got it welded on. Pulled a pop-up camper 100 miles with no problems (rental). I still thought about it every two seconds though..

You could just remove the rear bumper and have access to them. Also, nut strips are recommended. Check these out:

Also, I believe hitches hook up the same way from 84-01 models. I have one to go on after I do some (okay, A LOT) of bodywork and get those nut strips.

Default TOW HITCH XJ

A "Factory Chrysler Parts Dealer" showed the OEM/Mopar style hitch on their website and then they proceded to send me an updated version without telling me. It is a dropped down hitch and they will NOT return it.
Said since I ordered it via VIN#, that is was not returnable !!!! Put it on
just for the h____ of it and do not like the 6 inches of lost ground clearance. The hardest part about the install is to take off the rear bumper -- once that is done, everything is pretty easy.
Having an extra hand is VERY helpful. Did not have one, so made a little platform for hitch to balance on when floor jack was used.

I found a used OEM/Mopar one for a reasonable price a few hrs North of me and bought that one. It is from an earlier year, but I think holes should match up. Just wanted to check before I prime and paint it...

thanks, Randy
