Default Torqueing motor/tranny mount bolts?

89 XJ 4.0 auto 4x4 102,000.

Ok....first, who ever said changing motor mounts takes 30 minutes a side is insane. Okay maybe the passenger side wasn't too bad but the drivers side...took forever. Maybe I was having a bad day but I had to turn the long bolt out 1/10 of a turn at a time. Maybe I just didn't have the jack right for it to come out easy. But the ground I was on wasn't perfectly level and I was nervous to start messing too much. When I finally did get it out the motor did come down about an inch. Thought my hands were crushed for a second....but I finally got both sides done. Doing the trans mount tomorrow.

But I was just up sitting and wondering, how tight do I need to get the long 18mm bolt & the 15 mm bolt and nuts on the motor mounts? I got them pretty dang tight.

And what about the 18mm bolts on the trans mount? Should they be good and tight or just snugged up? I read they are going into aluminum. Basically is it worth the trouble of getting my hands on a torch wrench?

so I was just curious.....and sitting thinking, bored.

Okay. Those big buggers holding the mount to the adapter near the trans need to be TIGHT. I would use some LocTite also. They're prone to backing out.

Get all 3 mounts in but not super tight. Start the engine and cycle from r to D and back a few times.

THEN, tighten the mounts.

Agree. Should be 18 tops.

Yes.

People who have the ability to torque bolts PROPERLY without a torque wrench have:
  1. Tightened enough bolts WITH a torque wrench so that they know what a properly torqued bolt feels like;
  2. Are able to feel the "stretch" of the bolt and stop prior to the bolt's "yield" (which if you can do that consistently is better than "torquing"; and
  3. Understand the importance of proper bolt preparation to insure that the torque applied to the bolt is accurate.

4. Are aware of the factory's use of improper torque values and use of thread lockers which ended up being an issue during the service life of the vehicle that weren't apparent during the engineering phase.
This is the case where the big bolts go into the aluminum adapter from the trans mount.
