Is it too late to change the trans fluid?
I am sure this has been covered before, but I couldn't find it in my searching. The age old debate about changing high mileage trans fluid is haunting me. I have been told that if you wait too long to change the automatic trans fluid it will do more harm than good if you change it after that point. Everyone has their own version of what is "too much" 100K 150K 200K etc...
Anyway, I have a 95 that has 100K on just the engine, however the body, drivetrain, and AW4 Trans has 232,xxx miles on it. It shifts fine and seems to be in good shape for 232K on it! I am pretty sure that other than oil, none of the other fluids were changed, diff, trans, t-case, etc... so I was about to tackle some of these areas but I just wanted to get the overall vote:
To change or not to change given the situation?

Oh, I would also want to do a trans filter change too, if I can change the fluid.
If I am safe to change fluid, what is a good trans fluid to replace the old fluid. Since it doesn't get changed very often, I don't mind spending more on a product that will protect my trans.
Thanks again

I am not one for debates. I have seen many trans services turn ugly. However, if the fluid is mud colored or burnt it is not long before you will have a trans failure.
If it were mine I would change the fluid and the filter, I would flush the trans completely(I have a trans flush machine, but there are other ways) Use ATF type 4 and for extra lubricity and adheasion add in a pint of Lucas Trans Stop.

Thanks. I know quite a bit about engines but I am perplexed when it comes to transmissions. It is like a foreigh language to me lol. I will examine the fluid and see what color it is and go from there. I am hoping to make this trans last till 300k+ we'll see.
