Default TJ axles into XJ?

Will Dana 30 and 35s from a 97 TJ bolt directly into a 96 XJ 4.0?

no tjs have coil springs in the rear so the mounts will be setup for that..pretty sure the D30 will fit however

Yeah, pretty much. I have 31" tires on my XJ and driving through the mountains with 355s just doesn't cut it. I can't maintain interstate speed very well. I rarely go offroad so I'm not too worried about the D30/35 weaknesses... I just need to change gearing. I'm unsure of my ability to swap ring/pinion myself and had this bolted on, I would have only spent $150. The cheapest I've found is $600 + parts for a ring/pinion swap.

this part makes me laugh because your complaining about 31's and 3.55s. try 35's and 3.55's i still go the speed limit on the highway climbin the hills. i keep up with my buddies that tow sometimes.your fine on 31's IMO or you just save up for the gear change and have a pro install them. 4.10's IMHO would be fine for 31's

are you auto or manual?

I agree. I did 31's, 33's, and 35's with 3.55's and always kept up, just took a while.

Has to be an automatic since it has 3.55's, unless those have been swapped in once already.

duh lol im sleepy haha good point but ya never know.
so to the op when you start climbing up the mountains downshift to 3rd gear it will be easier for you to go the speed limit. i always downshift to 3rd once i start climbing and when i decend down the mountains.

Heh, I was just about to call you out and say "I live in the mountains though" until I saw you live about 20 miles from me.

Seriously, I'm dying on these. Maybe my BFGs have lots of rolling resistance. Maybe something else is wrong. But trying to cross the divide in 3rd isn't good news... I keep it in 3rd, which also locks the torque converter, but I can still watch it fall away from 60MPH until it downshifts to 2nd, then jumps back into 3rd, then starts falling away again...

And yeah, it's an automatic. I'm definitely saving up for the change, but keeping my eyes open for an axle/diff swap on the cheap. This has been a great vehicle to learn how to work on, but I think I'll leave that one up to the pros unless I find a whole setup ready to bolt on.

I've heard about that but don't know much about it. I like that it has discs. Would it require different wheels, or is it still 5x4.5?

edit: nvmd. Look, I know how to search! https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f30/fo...wap-info-3847/
