Ok I have a 96 jeep Cherokee 4.0 l 5 speed. So I pulled out the engine and did a stock rebuild on it and put it back in and now it won't start. I did pull out the distributor and didn't mark anything but I tried putting it at tdc but when I put the dist in this is only sometimes it shoots flame out the intake so I'm stuck and not sure what to do

to find tdc compression stroke remove no 1 spark plug turn the motor over by hand with a finger over the hole where plug was removed air pressure will push on you finger this confims compression stroke then turn the timing mark to tdc on crank pulley set dist rotor to no 1 in cap,it sounds like you might be 180 degrees out with the dist, what you can do is remove dist cap note which way rotor is pointing pull dist and rotate rotor 180 degrees and reinstall dist put cap back on and try to start

theres a small mark/groove in the crank pully when you fell air pressure pushing on you finger turn slowly untill the mark lines up on zero that tdc compression stroke install dist with rotor pointinfg to no 1 plug wire on cap
