I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Limited with the 4.0. I did something kind of stupid earlier. I removed the Camshaft Synchronizer without putting engine at TDC and not marking the pulse ring under the Camshaft Posiition Sensor. I searched around on here and couldn't find anything about this issue. I was having a rough running condition which is why I removed the synchronizer/distributor. I ended up replacing the timing chain which had tons of slack, the new one is banjo tight. I'm just wondering if there is a way to set the timing or reset the computer so I can set the engine at TDC and install the synchronizer the way it goes. I lined up the timing marks on the timing gears before removing and replacing the chain. Thanks in advance

Thanks for the search but I have tried to install it the ways that are shown in Youtube. Mostly everything on there is highlighted purple lol.

 

So it doesn't matter which way you pull the synchronizer out? As long as it goes back in at top dead center with the holes in the pulse ring and housing aligned? Anytime I try to install it at tdc and with a paperclip through the alignment holes, the sensor still goes in too far over. It's facing the engine when it's installed.

 

....because of the helical cut gears. Start off with putting sensor at 7:00 o'clock position. It will turn clockwise to the 9:00 o'clock position (pointing towards firewall) when you drop it in the rest of the way. BTW the only way to know for sure when you reach TDC is to remove #spark plug and feel for air blowing out before lining up marks on crankshaft.

 

Thank you for the response. I will give it a try here in a few minutes. I've been making sure it's on the compression stroke. I turn the motor and my wife feels for air, then I line up the mark with the "0" on the harmonic balancer.

 

Thanks a lot bigbadon! It worked! Throttle is very responsive and it's running with very little vibration. The sensor lined up perfect with the firewall. I really appreciate the help.
