The 1976 Cherokee Chief I obtained apparently had the timing chain replaced. The P.O. drove it home then the next day, it wouldn't run at all. I'm guessing the timing was messed up upon replacement. Is there anything else in the timing chain replacement process that would cause this?
And is the AMC 401 an interference engine?

Maybe one of the gears slipped. No way to know until you get in there.
And it could also be that nasty little guy known as Coincidence. Check the usual suspects before you tear into it. Fuel? Spark?
I once drove my car home, parked it, and could not get it to start the next day. I had spark, so I spent quite a bit of time tearing into the carburetors (yes, two) to try to figure it out, when my buddy asked, "Are you sure it has gas in it?"
Duh.
