timing chain ???

Default timing chain ???

Ok i had a tick since i bought this xj some one hqd suggested timing chain strech makzs sence has 196000 miles when i did my rms i looked at it best i could wit the cover on it looks good but very loose so that concurs my friends theory now i also have a weird rms leak it only leaks when i give a good amount of gas like getting up a large hill ect. It also seems to loose power now my question is would a stretched chain cause these problems just looking for other opinions thanx

Timing chains don't tick. Lifters do though.

Im pretty sure its not a lifter it has very good power up to bout 5 grand then itseems to fall on its face so to speak

5 grand?? good power to redline eh? If you have the cover off and are lookin at how loose the chain is, your 90% job done, so replace it.

Typo its more line 2500 3000 but when i go up a hill power goes away oil gauge drops tenp goes up also i have a bad battery so thats also affectin the gauges to me it seems like timing it also fs up my gas mileage

Time for a new motor. Have a compression test done.

I have and thats normal my father said stock lifter someone else suggested timing chain i mean if it were bearings oil pressure would always be low but its not if i stay on main st or do normal driven no large hills it runs normal its weird i have a rms leak that either never leaks or itpours out

Pull the plugs and remove the distributor cap.
Put a wrench on the harmonic balancer bolt and slowly rotate the engine until the ignition rotor just starts to move.
Note the position of the balancer. Or mark it with chalk.
Now slowly rotate the engine in the opposite direction, until the rotor just starts to move.
Take a guesstimate at how far the balancer has turned....3-4 degrees is still OK for chain slop. More than that it's worn.

Hey thanks i didnt know bout the 3-4 degrees of play ok ill have to check that out
