Default timing

i have a 2000 sport that needs the timing set. the problem i have is that its wireless. any general rule of thumb that might help me regain my lost power and mileage?
secondly. im having a problem with it stalling out randomly. sporadically the engine light comes on for a few miles. code 0455 gross leak. but once it stalls it resets the code. ive looked for leaks along the emissions and cant find any "gross" leak. cant find any leak for that matter. and yes i have checked the gas cap. could these two problems be related?
im at my witts end here trying to figure this out!!! any and all help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Respectfully,
Phil

No timing adjustment to be made.

Timing on all HO 2.5L and 4.0L motors is handled by the PCM.

Any other codes?

i was kinda thinking that the pcm HAD to have something to do with it. i feel foolish for posting that lol.
no, no other codes. just 0455.
in the link you sent me it states. "Many times if you actually fix the problem the light will go off on its own." ok i guess im pondering what would make the engine stall and tell the puter "its fixed?"

Hey Phil, you are saying that when the vehicle "stalls" you restart it and the check engine light is off and the p0455 code is cleared.....if that is the case you either have a ground fault that is causing the pcm to momentarily lose connection or a bad computer. As far as the p0455.....you have a emission line or vacuum line that is cracked or broken, another cause could be a vent solenoid that is not closing all the way.

It is not the pcm. I think it has to be a broken wire somewhere in the wiring harness that causes the pcm to short out. Does your xj stall all the time or only when you first start it up? My xj does the same thing as yours. The jeep stalls and the computer loses the code for an evap leak. My jeep stalls only in the first 10 mins of driving but once it is warm it does not do it anymore. I did replace my PCM and no fix to the stalling.

I am also thinking that when the pcm goes to closed loop or when the fuel tank evaporation fumes are sucked into the intake manifold to be used, the evap leak causes an air/fuel ratio problem that causes the jeep to stall. I have been told that evap leaks do not cause stalling but the 2000 and 2001 xj jeeps are a little different from all the rest.

Have you cleaned all of your engine/chassis grounds?

unfortunately im only aware of the braided ground going to the firewall. \

yes i did say that she totally stalls at random but, when the engine light comes on its usually within a mile or 3 that it will stall and reset the code.

there are times that she will spit and sputter (while trying to stall) but regain rpm (while im driving).

yesterday. i went for a short ride. shut it off for like 5 minutes. restarted it and it sounded like i was missing at least 2 cyclenders. spittin & sputtering for about a half block then she was fine again. the engine light did come on but she stalled and reset before i got home.

I found a burnt wire under the PDC (box under hood on passenger side with the fuses). The wire went to the O2 sensors. I replaced the wires that were bad there and the jeep runs alot better now. Maybe you can check under your PDC for the same problem.

OK this is where i stand as of yesterday. first off im a bit confused about this p0340 code. on the scanner it reads camshaft position sensor A, bank 1, circuit malfunction. well i went and replaced the cps and it didnt even run 30 seconds and stalled!!! so i have to assume that the sensor wasnt bad. same code appeared. with the way it reads "sensor A, bank 1, circuit malfunction". could this mean that its in the wiring?

i also went to work and cleaned the 4 ground terminals on the block. the one on the firewall and the one next to the battery. i also cleaned the main feed going into the fuse block under the hood.

i getting really frustrated!

respectfully,
phil

well i think i finally figured it out. wont know for sure till thursday. was out pissin around w/ the IAC and a couple other thingys. had a can of carb cleaner in my hand so i spruced up the TB. i was once told to spray around the injectors to test for a leak. if theres one there it will tend to idle rough. well for ****s & giggles i did #1, #2 and came to #3 and she damn close to stalled out! i have my fingers crossed

thanks for all the support people!!!

respectfully,
phil
