Smile 1996 2.5 XJ?

Hey guys,
Newbie to this forum, but not newbie to jeeps!
I have a lifted 92 thats been cut looks like a hummer haha !
and a wrangler 93 thats the biggest money pit in the world and still is junk!

But anyway my question is about the 2.5 4 cylinder in a 96 2 door with the 5 speed and 4x4. I came by the jeep for sale went and looked at it. Jeep is real clean it only has rust on drivers side rocker panels. It runs real great no noises no nothing wrong with it. It shifts great and so on. SMELLS AWFUL been sitting for 5 years! I did a search of the forums and didn't find anything answering my question I have. I want to know about power wise with the 4 cylinder is it going to be like driving a turd or have decent power. On test drive it seem to be moving rite along. I plan to do some slight towing with it 6x10 trailer, maybe car dolley another XJ or YJ every now and then but only a few miles nothing major. Then the rest of the time just to be a toy, go fishing , hunting with it and so on. With gas these days I think the 4 cylinder maybe the way to go. Future maybe lifted to 3 inch with 31s nothing more. NO heavy offroading either. So anyway do they seem to have decent power? Reliable? Pros? cons? any problems with the motor?

Thanks alot!

The 4 poopers are alright. One benifit to them is that in that XJ's configuration, it should have 4.10:1 gears from the factory. As for powering itself, it'll do fine. Highway speeds may be difficult with anything larger then 32" tires, 5th gear may become useless.

My biggest gripe with the 4 cylinder sticks are the transmission itself. AX-5, not a AX-15. The 5, in my experience, is a piece of garbage. I had one blow apart the 3/4th inner hub... at a red light. They aren't by any means bullet proof.

If the moneys right and its in good order, I don't see why not though.

For a DD or trail/dirt roading, it should be fine. I wouldn't want to tow with a 4cyl.

thanks guys for the reply

Yea i dont plan on going anything bigger then 31s.. it has 30s on it now the price is real great though there just about giving away the jeep. I use to do alot of mechanic work lifting and modding for a garage / junk yard but now my back is blown out so i dont do much. I just want something to go from point a to b .. If its used for towing it wont be much it'll be towing. I had the mechanic who i learned from crawl under it he said it looked great no grease or oil all over. He also said it looked like the bigger tranny that was in a 4.0 jeep 96 cherokee that we had put into my wrangler. ... He said the drivers side floor is going to need to be replaced eventually and the rest looks brand new. On the wrangler they have the vacum dana 30s he said he never seen any vacum lines on the front rear ??? not sure i couldnt see under it much but its a question ive been wondering. I ended up buying it cause for junk its worth more then i paid went to dmv and got it registered today maybe be driving it home tonight or tomorrow
